St. Petersburg Hospital is proud to be leading the way in new, minimally invasive surgery techniques. The robot-assisted da Vinci surgery offers patients a less invasive procedure with excellent results. It is named after Leonardo da Vinci, who invented the first robot and was an artistic master of 3-D paintings. When it comes to practicing medicine, the da Vinci surgery technique enables physicians to work with enhanced detail and precision. Our highly skilled surgeons guide robotic movement for a wide array of general and complex surgeries. High definition video allows surgeons to experience unique views inside the body in 3-D.
The da Vinci system is a robotic surgical platform that allows doctors to operate through 1- to 2-cm “ports.” Traditional surgery requires larger incisions and a longer recovery time. The da Vinci surgery allows doctors to perform major surgery through a much smaller incision – meaning less pain, a shorter recovery time and less scarring for patients. Using the da Vinci method permits surgeons greater precision, increased range of motion, and better visualization.
The types of surgeries that da Vinci can enhance include laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, or endoscopic surgery. Some common examples of those include surgery for prostate cancer; urology; heart surgery; abdominal surgeries like gall bladder removal, hysterectomy, and removal of uterine fibroids; and surgery for vaginal or uterine prolapse.
Any surgery has risks associated with it. Talk to your doctor about your treatment options. When medication and lifestyle changes aren’t helping your condition, it may be time to discuss the benefits of surgery. At St. Petersburg General Hospital, our physicians specialize in a wide array of general surgical procedures. We have a dedicated robotic surgical suite for treatment using da Vinci robotic surgery.
