ST PETERSBURG GENERAL HOSPITAL IS TAMPA BAY AREA LEADER IN TRAINING SURGEONS ON LATEST ROBOTIC TECHNOLOGY

A new virtual-reality training simulator is helping surgeons at St. Petersburg General Hospital become even more proficient with the new da Vinci Si surgical system, a state-of-the-art platform for minimally-invasive surgery.

The da Vinci Skills Simulator looks and feels like the real thing, but instead of using physical instruments, surgeons use virtual needles and objects.

St. Petersburg General maintains a concerted focus on patient safety and continues to make very significant investments in and progress toward state-of-the-art technologies for enhanced patient care. “Use of the simulator will allow our surgeons to maximize operating room efficiencies while providing optimal surgical outcomes and maximum safety to our patients,” states Deborah Worsham, Director of Surgical Services.

Simulation in all forms is becoming an important part of the learning experience for surgical technology. By providing a controlled re-creation of critical steps in instrument control, simulation allows surgeons to practice their skills in a non-clinical environment that once required expensive models or cadavers for learning. The da Vinci Skills Simulator provides surgeons with objective feedback on their performance when they complete an exercise.

St. Petersburg General Hospital is a Joint Commission accredited full-service 219-bed acute care facility, providing comprehensive emergency, diagnostic, medical, surgical and women’s services and is accredited as a Breast Center with Digital Imaging and Computer Aided Detection, Chest Pain Center and Certified Advanced Primary Stroke Center.
