Medical technology is always changing, and at St. Petersburg General Hospital, we’re dedicated to offering patients the best treatments available. One of these includes robotic surgery, where a skilled surgeon guides a robot through a surgical procedure. The robot doesn’t perform the surgery on its own—rather, the surgeon uses the robot as a surgical tool. Surgeons get highly specialized training in conducting robotic surgeries.
Most robotic procedures use much smaller incisions than the ones made during a traditional procedure. These smaller incisions have multiple benefits for the patient:
- Reduced scarring
- Less blood loss
- Shorter recovery time
Although not all procedures can be done robotically, St. Petersburg General Hospital has a team of surgeons who can perform gynecologic, urologic, and general surgeries using the da Vinci® robot.
A New Addition
St. Petersburg General Hospital is proud to have recently acquired the new Si Surgical System from da Vinci. This robot offers even greater benefits than previous models:
- Enhanced 3D, high-definition vision of operative field with up to 10X magnification
- New optional dual console allows second surgeon to provide assistance
- Superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy
- Surgical dexterity and precision far greater than even the human hand
- Updated and simplified user interface to enhance operating room efficiency
- New ergonomic settings for greater surgeon comfort
Meanwhile, we’ve also added a robotic surgery simulator to our graduate medical education program. That means doctors have access to the best tools available as they enhance their robotic surgery skills. We’re the first in Pinellas County to get both the simulator and the Si Surgical System.
