Are you suffering from arthritis? Ask yourself these questions to determine if you’re doing everything possible to effectively manage your condition.
Am I maintaining a healthy weight? Being overweight places extra stress on joints, which can aggravate stiffness, pain and other arthritis symptoms. Consuming a balanced diet is an important part of staying healthy.
Do I exercise regularly? Being active and staying physically fit has been shown to help control arthritis pain and improve joint function. Activities that are easy on the joints–such as walking, swimming, tai chi or yoga–can benefit both mind and body.
Do I get adequate sleep? Sleep provides your body with the chance to rest and rejuvenate. Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night.
Do I approach everyday tasks in the best ways? Living well with arthritis may mean rethinking how you perform everyday tasks. For instance, you may find chopping carrots easier if you use an ergonomically designed kitchen slicer. Brushing teeth may be easier if you first slip a cushioned hair roller over the handle of your toothbrush. Dressing may be easier if you choose clothing with zippers or Velcro closures as opposed to buttons.
Do I drive an arthritis-friendly car? A car with lightweight doors and push button controls instead of knobs can make driving more comfortable.
Do I discuss details of my arthritis with my doctor? Your doctor may be able to prescribe medication to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. In addition, he or she can tell you if you’re a good candidate for joint replacement surgery.
